I Want to be a Character in a Louis Auchincloss Novel

I WANT TO BE A CHARACTER IN A LOUIS AUCHINCLOSS NOVEL

His crystalline words are potent and profound

The ideation will bedazzle and astound

Every aside, amplified, will searingly  resound

He drives us proles of prose into the ground

The women wear tiaras, gleaming, haute and chic

While bedecked in satins, they lament that life is bleak

They go to Europe so often the sea is but a creek

They persuade the parson heaven’s not for the meek

The boys go to Groton, are lean and blond and strong

They throw footballs, speak French and make me feel so wrong

Someone assuredly who does not belong

A Jew to be pilloried in a Christian song

I wish we owned Manhattan land in 1821.

And asset values scaled palace walls through Victoria’s run

All my imperfections would be remedied, undone

I’d saunter in ballrooms and life would be fun
